Joanne and Nick are kicking off their shoes, ready for bed, when a knock rattles the door. Lauren swings it open and her goddaughter Avery barrels into her arms, bawling. Before Joanne can even steady herself, a cop steps up and drops the bomb: Avery's folks died in a wreck. Joanne and Nick promise they'll take her in. Months roll by and Avery glues herself to every inch of their lives—no privacy, no space. She doesn't cry, doesn't miss them, and Nick starts twitching every time she walks by. He corners Joanne, insists something's off with the girl, but Joanne waves him off. Nick backs down, grumbling they still can't fuck without an audience. The second Avery steps out for a smoke, they slam the bedroom door and start tearing at each other's clothes, half-crazed. They don’t realize the closet door never fully shut behind them.
