To Catch a Cheater

Camera slides into the car. Joe's gripping the wheel like he still owns her, but the wedding band on his finger tells you the truth—she's the one in charge. He looks over at Vanessa with puppy-dog eyes. She's re-painting her mouth in the visor mirror, smacks her lips, shoots him a quick smile without even turning her head.
Joe asks if she wants him to drop her closer. Vanessa says no thanks, he’s got work to do. Finish line: “A few blocks won’t kill me.” She fluffs her hair and tells him not to wait up either; the meeting might drag. He groans—Danny’s coming for dinner and she’ll miss him again. She pouts, all fake innocence.
He leans in for the goodbye kiss. She doesn’t even pause—just opens the door, steps out, kills the mood in one motion. From street level we watch the car peel away. Vanessa glances over her shoulder, then forward again, calm as hell. Close in as that left hand rises, slides the ring off nice and slow, letting it dangle for a second before it disappears into her purse.
She hits the porch of a modest house, rings the bell. The kid who answers—built, shirt half-tucked—can’t be more than twenty. Vanessa gives him the elevator stare, breezes past like she owns the place. “You must be Danny,” she says.
Door shuts. He whips out his phone for proof, snapping a shot. “Friends won’t believe I bagged you.” She wants to see ID—wants to be sure he’s eighteen. He offers it; she shrugs, already done caring. Eyes drift around the house, curious and cold. Nice digs, whose place is it? “Mine and some buddies,” he says, parents gone, the usual. He asks what to call her. “Don’t bother,” she shoots back. “We fuck, we’re done, I walk.”
Next thing she’s shoving him onto the bed, kicking off her heels while he peels his shirt. Vanessa clocks the family photo above the headboard—Danny and Joe, side by side, big grins. Her stomach drops. Danny clocks her clocking it, grin widening like a trap snapping shut.
“Relax,” he says, “I’ll just text Dad a little souvenir. Show him what his sweet wife gets up to.” Vanessa tries charm, tries lust—hell, she even admits it: he wants the step-mom he never had. He laughs, tells her she’s pathetic and to hit the floor. She sinks to her knees, lips already parting, ring finger naked and guilty, the queen turned prey, the cougar deciding her best bet is to swallow hard and keep the photo from seeing daylight.
