Father Figure

The scene kicks off in the living room where Linda and her eighteen-year-old stepdaughter Sam sit together, both looking pretty down. They’re talking about the man of the house who just passed, leaving them broke. They’re grateful Uncle Jerry—his stepbrother—is coming to help out. There’s a knock at the door. Linda takes a deep breath while Sam assures her everything will work out, then opens it. Jerry steps in with his luggage. Greetings are warm but still a little heavy. Sam thanks him for showing up, and Jerry says it’s what family does. After a quiet moment, Sam steers them past the grief and shows Jerry his room. Once he’s gone, she turns and hugs Linda, telling her they’ll get through this together. Linda smiles faintly, hugging her back. Sam pulls away just enough to look her in the eye. “We’re gonna get over this together… as a group,” she insists. CUT TO TITLE Weeks roll by. Jerry settles in, handling bills and fixes around the house. Sam watches him a little too long, clearly feeling something heat up between them. Late one night, she’s tossing in bed, staring at the ceiling. Jerry passes the doorway, stops, and asks if he can come in. Sam tells him sure—then slips and calls him “stepdad.” Jerry freezes in the doorway. She catches herself, mortified, eyes wide. Jerry comes over anyway and sits on the edge of the bed. Sam sits up. He takes her hand, asking if she still misses her stepdad. She hesitates, then admits she’s mixed up—looking at Jerry like a man and feeling pulled to him through all the loss. Jerry says he’s never felt this close to any family before. He could see staying for good. Sam begs him not to leave over her confused feelings. Jerry shakes his head. It’s not her feelings that worry him—it’s his own. He’s drawn to both her and Linda, and the lines are blurring. He leans in, stops, mutters that it’s wrong. Sam grabs his wrist, pleading they’ve all lost too much to throw away a chance at being happy. Jerry gives in. Their mouths meet, soft at first, then hungry, years of tension finally cracking open. They’ve found comfort in each other, but the question still hangs: will Linda be ready to share this new reality?
