Harold and Martha say goodbye to their dinner guests, then the real talk starts in the kitchen. Martha lowers her voice: she wants to know how Harold feels about Cassie turning eighteen, and whether she can handle the truth about the swap. Harold shrugs. Then his face hardens. If she fights it, he mutters, they will just have to show her some tough love. A few days later the family gathers for Cassie’s birthday dinner. Once the plates are cleared, Harold and Martha sit her down and drop the bomb—CASSIE is not their real daughter.
